The biggest shake-up to self-assessment in a generation, Making Tax Digital, comes into effect on April 6 for sole traders and landlords earning £50,000 or more.
Hudson has produced a new video featuring Chelsea Turner, business development, and Hannah Watson, co-director at Grenfell James (pictured in our studio, left to right).
In the video, Hannah answers frequently asked questions from subcontractors posed by Chelsea.
Chelsea said: “As the biggest payer of subbies in the construction industry, we are on hand to help whenever we can.
“We’ve done the legwork of looking at different solutions, and decided to recommend Grenfell James, a specialist accountancy firm, which provides a straightforward, affordable service that lets people with qualifying income keep their current accountancy arrangements in place for everything but MTD if they wish. It costs as little as £10 per month plus VAT, and they have a range of packages available.
“If you haven’t already done so, our advice is to sign up to a trusted service now. It will become a habit before you know it.”

From April 6, sole traders and landlords who earned more than £50,000 during the 2024-25 tax year must use HMRC compatible software to report their income and expenses with the first quarterly reports due by August 7.
Under the new system, they must create, maintain, and correct digital records of their self-employment and property income and expenses, and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. They are also required to file their tax return and pay any tax due by January 31 of the following year.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is being introduced in phases: from April 2027 for those earning over £30,000, and from April 2028 for those earning over £20,000, meaning the vast majority of subbies will eventually be affected.
