Building futures together: Hudson celebrates skills partnership at college showcase

10th April 2025 | Hudson Contract

Hudson Contract joined a successful networking event at East Riding College, connecting local employers and training providers to help develop talent in key sectors including construction.

The Bridlington Connect Lunch saw an impressive turnout of stakeholders who work with the college in various capacities – from employing apprentices and sponsoring training to supporting college initiatives that raise student aspirations.

Students from the catering and hospitality department welcomed guests and served a delicious three-course meal they had prepared for the occasion. Attendees also toured the college's training facilities during the event.

Representatives from local organisations attended, including McCain Foods, Premier Modular, One SC Media, and the Lords Feoffees, a Bridlington-based charity that has adopted Hudson's approach of sponsoring apprenticeships.

Attendees received insights from the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce, which highlighted challenges surrounding recruitment, accessibility, careers guidance, work readiness, and the transition to digital and net zero practices.

Industry trends were also discussed, with East Riding College noting an increase in demand for bricklayer courses this year, following last year's focus on joinery, while demand for electrician training remains consistently high.

The local skills plan is targeting growth sectors including health and social care, engineering, manufacturing, agriculture and construction – with particular emphasis on meeting the government's target for building 1.5 million new homes across the UK.

Employers welcomed the government's decision to give them the right to determine whether English and Mathematics qualifications should be required for adult apprenticeships. This change removes a barrier for capable people with the right attitude and aptitude who previously struggled with these academic requirements.

Bridlington-based Hudson has established strong partnerships with East Riding College across multiple campuses in Bridlington, Beverley, Hull, and Scarborough.

Earlier this year, The Hudson Foundation expanded its apprenticeship programme from 30 to 40 placements annually, increasing funding from £2,600 to £3,000 per apprentice and adding a new £500 completion bonus split between employers and apprentices. Since 2011, the scheme has helped 278 young people enter the construction industry, where skilled tradespeople can earn over £1,000 weekly.

Luke Portlock, business engagement consultant at East Riding College, said: "It was fantastic to see so many businesses in one room who support us. What we do as a college would not be achievable without your support. As a college group, we were able to showcase the great work we do, and the students absolutely did us proud!"

David Jackson, founder and chairman of Hudson, said: "Feedback from smaller companies shows many struggle to navigate the apprenticeship system – the information is scattered all over the place. If they want to take the next step and find out about funding and training opportunities, we encourage them to email Fiona Gamwell and ask for a chat."

As Hudson's business support manager, Fiona specialises in helping construction firms access training opportunities and funding. She is a member of the government-backed Yorkshire and Humber Apprenticeship Ambassador Network.
