Investing in the future of construction

Supporting apprentices

As a business, Hudson Contract is always keen to give back to the construction industry.  And in 2011, the following advert in our local paper gave us food for thought:

SEEKING APPRENTICESHIP Young man (17) desperately seeking an Electrician Apprenticeship.  Extremely enthusiastic, reliable, fit and hard-working individual, with full driving licence and own transport.  Currently in second year of an appropriate college course and can be transferred to specific apprenticeship course.  If you could possibly offer an apprenticeship to a very genuine person, please call

And so the Hudson Contract Apprentice Scheme was born

We offer financial support to employers in Bridlington and Scarborough to help them take on an apprentice, paying £50 per week towards each apprentice’s wage for the first year of their training. And what started as a one-off is has grown into a valued – and permanent – part of the Hudson Contract culture.

We have now sponsored more than 210 apprentices. To celebrate our 25th anniversary we expanded the scheme nationwide and sponsored 25 apprentices for 25 clients across England and Wales.

Construction firms find our initiative easy to use and, as busy people, company directors appreciate the limited amount of bureaucracy involved. However, they often tell us they find it difficult to understand what government funding is available to take on apprentices and how best to access various schemes.

Taking on board this feedback we have developed a new website – www.constructionapprenticeships.co.uk with helpful pointers and easy-to-understand advice. It provides a one-stop shop for employers and would-be apprentices with information on funding available and guidance for young people trying to find employers.
